Over the summer a new restaurant opened up in the Newfield Green shopping plaza on Newfield Ave. A new twist on Chinese food, “Village Gourmet” puts a spin on the typical Stamford Chinese food with real chicken, fresh vegetables and great sauces made right at the restaurant.
I ordered the sesame chicken. The menu indicated that there would be whole white meat chicken pieces, unlike at many other Chinese eateries around Stamford. When the plate came to my table, it was a very good portion size with perfectly cooked green beans and broccoli under it, collecting the wonderful sesame sauce that coated the chicken. I first cut open into the chicken and saw the large chunk of the breast without any cartilage or fat chunks in it. The white rice was bereft of flavor and seasonings, unlike the other courses.
Overall the entire meal wasn’t awful. The ambiance was really great with a lot of lights and paintings in the restaurant. The service on the other hand was slow and the entire restaurant staff constantly talked in Chinese which could make some people uncomfortable. Finally, the food price was extremely expensive. Even though it was high quality, the price was still three times higher than the majority of other Stamford Chinese restaurants. I give the restaurant 2 out of 5 stars.
