With the upcoming release of Samsung’s new phone the Samsung Galaxy s7 I was quick to ask whether this new phone is really better than its predecessor, Samsung Galaxy S6 released last year. If you were wondering the same thing then look no further. Here, I will compare the new to old and answer if waiting for the new phone is really worth it.
Battery
Although some believed the Galaxy S7 would have removable battery or USB Type-c connector, this is sadly unlikely. Instead the battery will have 3,000 mAh capacity. After Samsung reduced battery size from the Samsung Galaxy S5 to the S6, this battery is much bigger than the Galaxy S5’s. Improvements made to the Galaxy S6 that will continue into the S7 include Android Marshmallow which is a system that helps provide longer battery life, so even if the battery size is not increased this can still help improve the Galaxy S7’s battery over the S6’s. It also will be able to charge faster and wirelessly.
Software
The Samsung Galaxy S6 had used Touchwiz as its software. It has done a great job so it may be continued into the Galaxy S7. Another option for Samsung is replacing it with Force Touch. That is the same technology seen in the Huawei Mate S Luxor. Although this software is better it would increase the price of the smartphone and all apps cannot take advantage of the new software.
Performance
The processor in the Galaxy S6 is Exynos 7420. It also holds 3GB of RAM. The Galaxy S7 may use a Snapdragon 820 processor instead and will house 4 GB of RAM. The Galaxy S6 has been known to be fast so the Galaxy S7 could improve the speed with the processors and RAM mentioned above, but the change will be minimal.
Design
The design for the devices does not seem to have great variation. Like the Samsung Galaxy S6 the S7 will also be released in two versions; flat and dual edge. The Galaxy S6 is made up of glass and metal materials. This classy look made the phone lose the ability to have a microSD and a removable battery. The Galaxy S7 will most likely have a sleek metal and glass exterior as well as the heart rate sensor, fingerprint scanner, and camera sensor. Unlike the Galaxy S6 though it may be able to hold a microSD card.
Display
The Galaxy S6 had a QHD display with 2,560x 1,440 pixels. The Galaxy S7 could improve upon this by having 4K resolution, but this is unlikely because it would not be cost effective. Its QHD resolution display will most lightly remain the same dimensions as the Galaxy S7. The Galaxy S7 could improve on brightness, color, and/or battery efficiency, but only time will tell.
Camera
Currently the Galaxy S6 had a 16 megapixel (MP) back camera and a 5 MP front camera. It may seem odd but the Galaxy S7 may reduce the back camera resolution to 12 MP and instead use DUO PIXEL technology; a feature that would help increase image clarity. Other rumors say the MP won’t change from the Galaxy S6 to the S7, but that the DUO PIXEL technology is possible either way.
Conclusion
The Galaxy S6 made huge progress from the Galaxy S5 making it hard for Samsung to keep up with these high tech improvements. Instead they have tried to improve the Galaxy S6 in many little ways. It is also rumored that Samsung will try to reduce the cost of the phone by 10 percent. With a lot of rumors and nothing released yet it is hard for buyers to decide if the Samsung Galaxy S7 is worth waiting for.
In my opinion a current Galaxy S6 owner should stick to their phone. Spending the money on a brand new phone and upgrade is not worth the minimal changes. Although if you are an owner of a Samsung Galaxy S5 or older this phone is definitely worth the wait. It should be one of the best Samsung Galaxy’s released so far.
